What are Custom Prescription Doses?

Submitted: April 15, 2018 | Submitted By: webtech

Everyone’s health needs are unique. Just as you’d want your doctor to give your examination the time and care it deserves, we believe that your medications should be given the utmost attention to yield their best results. Medication should not be one-size-fits-all. That’s why Wiley’s can work with your physician to address sensitivities to standard doses of medicine in an effort to find a solution that will work for you.

There are a few different reasons why a patient might need their prescription to be adjusted from the original, standard form. Some of the most common reasons why custom dosages may be necessary is if the patient has difficulty swallowing pills or if they have sensitivity to the potency of a single dose.

Difficulty Swallowing Pills

Custom doses are ideal for patients that have a hard time swallowing pills. This could be caused by a wide range of scenarios, including:

  • Injury – If a patient is recovering from a serious injury or illness, the muscles in their throat may be impaired, making it difficult for them to take pills.
  • Age – It’s common for elderly patients to have a hard time swallowing. Similarly, small children are often unable to swallow pills.

If swallowing pills is an issue for you, Wiley’s can often compound oral medications that can be administered with their original potency. Our team of experienced pharmacists may be able to create a liquid dosage form from capsules and tablets. In some cases, flavors can be added, which is a feature that’s especially useful for children who may be reluctant to take their medicine.

Sensitivity to Medication Ingredients

Another reason you might need to seek custom dosages is if standard doses cause stomach upset. Sometimes, all that needs to happen is for the medicine to be released more slowly into the body. With certain medications, it may be possible for our pharmacists to offer smaller doses that are taken more frequently to deliver the same amount of medicine in a manner that’s easier on your system.

While customization of prescription medication dosages may depend largely on the specific type of drug, the potential to have your medication adjusted to meet your needs is a unique service that you won’t find at many pharmacies.  The pharmacists at Wiley’s are always a great resource, if ever you have questions about your prescription. So, don’t continue to struggle taking your medicine. There may be options available to you to make your prescriptions easier to manage.
