Acne can affect more than just your skin—it can impact your self-confidence, emotions, and sociability. An estimated 80 percent of people between ages 11 and 30 have acne outbreaks at some point. Acne doesn’t have to rule your life and certain products can help. With a new school year starting soon, here are some products you can try to help prevent and control skin blemishes.

Why is a skin care routine important?

Our skin is our largest organ, so it’s important to keep it healthy. A good skin care regimen will keep your skin clean and germ-free. This can solve issues with oily skin and mild breakouts. So, a mild cleanser, occasionally using an exfoliating wash, and a lotion can be a good way to establish a good skin care routine. Remember that it might take using the products for a couple of weeks use to notice results. However, over time this routine will be easier to maintain.

What products can help treat pesky blemishes and acne?

If you continue to have skin problems while following a healthy skin care routine, you may need a stronger product. Clearasil and similar products contain benzoyl peroxide, which works by reducing the amount of acne-causing bacteria. Products like Neutrogena have an oil-free acne wash that contains salicylic acid to help the shedding of the skin cells inside the pores and prevent clogging. These products are dermatologist recommended.

I take good care of my skin, so why do I still have pimples?

Even if you have your skin routine perfected, sometimes stress and hormones will cause breakouts. In these situations, treat the pimple immediately with a spot treatment. Making sure your diet is balanced can help as well.

Acne scars can be left behind from severe blemishes, over exfoliating, and agitating or popping pimples. So, even if your skin has cleared up, you might be left with scarring. Mild scarring will diminish over time, but if you have severe scarring considering contacting a dermatologist.
